DESCRIPTION:If women are the “backbone” of communities\, how do we support them as organizers and leaders at every level? \nThe Rural Assembly will host 250 participants at the inaugural Rural Women’s Summit in Greenville\, SC\, October 27-29\, to examine how we support and strengthen women’s leadership in rural America. We know rural women are often the primary organizers\, leaders\, creators\, and implementers of more just and inclusive efforts in their communities. At the Summit we will honor the diverse stories and experiences of rural women\, particularly women of color\, Indigenous women\, LGBTQIA voices\, and immigrants\, by engaging them as speakers and framers at all levels. We’ll hear from women journalists\, organizers and activists\, artists and poets\, lawyers and professors\, faith leaders\, and young women\, who are building bridges and crossing borders to better connect us to one another and the places we call home. This Summit is designed for rural practitioners\, leaders\, and advocates to articulate the broad civic\, political\, and cultural impact of women’s leadership in rural America. \nTogether we’ll name the ways rural women are agents of change\, call out the barriers rural women face every day\, and proclaim the powerful role rural women play in creating more compassionate communities. DESCRIPTION:In the lead-up to the 2020 United State of Women Summit\, USOW is convening communities across the country and equipping women with the tools they need to keep fighting for gender equity.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us at the Galvanize Program in Sacramento\, CA on Saturday\, October 26th to learn about the work being done in California and across the country\, as well as connect with local activists\, community leaders\, and Californians looking to make a difference. This includes a training session led by national experts on topics such as: \n\nRunning for Office powered by VoteRunLead\nLeadership powered by Courtney Seard\nEntrepreneurship powered by O³\nCommunity Engagement\n\nThe day begins with an engagement fair and local marketplace for attendees to network with local organizations and partners before transitioning to a high-energy mainstage session. The afternoon has attendees break into tracks to in-depth and skill-based trainings. Please note that when selecting your Galvanize ticket\, you are also selecting your breakout track. We would love it if you could support and come to the event. \nAs you know\, CVH is a member-led organization that was started 25 years ago under the auspices of the Hunger Action Network of New York by eight New York City women who were fed up with the oppressive policies that were designed to keep them in poverty. They wanted to upend the existing power structures and build the power of women of color to transform the social safety net into a system that would enable low-income people to break out of poverty. CVH has since evolved into an organization that has been powerfully working to strengthen the power and civic engagement of people of color from New York City through the Hudson Valley. \nAt this year’s event\, we will celebrate the power we have built and energize us for the battles that lie ahead. We will be honoring four people\, who share our vision of power and are collaborators and allies in building the engagement and voices of low-income and working-class people of color.

Register here. \nCouncilmember At-Large Helen Gym\, Philadelphia\, PA \nSeated in 2016\, Councilmember Helen Gym is the first Asian American woman elected to the Philadelphia City Council.  She chairs the Council’s Children and Youth Committee and helped to end the 17-year state takeover of Philadelphia’s school system. She introduced and passed the nation’s most expansive Fair Workweek law\, guaranteeing advance notice of schedules\, a pathway to more hours\, and protections from retaliation for 130\,000 workers at retail\, food service\, and hospitality corporations. She established the city’s first legal defense fund for tenants facing eviction and the first budget fund to specifically address youth homelessness. She has also expanded the city’s living wage laws\, requiring disclosure for businesses accepting city subsidies.  She is Vice Chair of Local Progress\, a network of progressive municipal leaders. \nLauren Popper Ellis\, Director of Policy and Programs\, Future Now \nLauren has worked on law and policy at the state level in the Attorney General’s Office\, the Governor’s Office and the State Senate in New York and also has campaign experience at the local\, state\, and national levels. She is a graduate of Yale University and Harvard Law School\, where she was an editor of the Harvard Law Review.  With deep experience in state elected office and supporting those in state government\, Future Now is a national organization focused on helping state lawmakers achieve goals for the common good.  Future Now offers a robust support system to provide lawmakers with innovative policies and a national network of peers and experts.

DESCRIPTION:Senator Nikema Williams currently serves as a member of the Georgia State Senate for District 39. She currently serves as Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia\, and was a delegate to the 2008\, 2012 and 2016 Democratic National Conventions. Prior to being elected as state senator\, Senator Williams served as vice-president of Public Policy for Planned Parenthood Southeast. \nHeather Barmore is an Advisor to VoteRunLead. Prior to joining VoteRunLead she was the Director of Advocacy at Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC) and the Director of Digital Communications for Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington\, DC. She has also held positions in digital communications with the Democratic National Convention Committee and electoral strategy and lobbying with New York State United Teachers (NYSUT). Her political career began with an affinity for watching C-SPAN’s Senate coverage\, a passion she holds to this day. Heather is an advocate for women in politics\, digital organizing\, and excellent storytelling. Her writing has been featured in The Guardian\, Refinery29\, The Toast\, The Huffington Post\, and Mic. An alumna of the American University in Washington\, DC\, Heather has been on the Advisory Board of Running Start\, a nonpartisan movement of young women leaders since 2014.

This full day workshop targeted to women will give you the framework to develop your platform\, plan your back office infrastructure and begin planning for a successful campaign. Designed to be non-partisan\, we will also connect you to local resources. If you have a passion to serve\, you can run for office and win! Stay tuned for registration information. \nThis event is facilitated in partnership with VoteRunLead\, the Women’s Fund of Rhode Island\, &  the Women’s Fund of Southeastern Massachusetts. It is made possible with support by the Women’s Center at Bristol Community College\, Governor Gina Raimondo\, Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea\, General Treasurer Seth Magaziner and the Coalition of Labor Union Women. \nThis workshop will run from 8am-4pm. She is also a former GA state representative having won a special election (and flipping a seat from red to blue) in 2017 that gained national media attention (including from Michael Moore\, CNN\, Telemundo\, etc.) as it was on the crest of a blue wave in 2017 that continues now.  During her legislative tenure\, Gonzalez served on the Judiciary Non-Civil House Committee where she made a name for herself as a skillful questioner\, earning her the nickname “The Cross Examiner.”  Gonzalez has a reputation as a no-nonsense\, people-first legislator seen in the community every day. Gonzalez has been a leader in getting women to run and sharing her knowledge and experiences to help them be successful whether campaigning or serving in office.
